Biography
I graduated from UWA with a Bachelor of Science (with Honours) in 2004. I worked for 3 years for the Department of Planning, in the coastal planning team, before returning to UWA to undertake a PhD in environmental economics. After completing my doctorate in 2011 I have specialised in developing decision tools for natural hazard mitigation and environmental management, non-market valuation of environmental resources and adoption of agricultural management practices. I am based in the northern agricultural region, with strong links to the farming community.
Key research
My research aim is to provide better advice to decision makers on effective policy design, adoption and the factors driving community values of such policies. Currently I’m working on:
Identifying and estimating the value of health, social and environmental impacts from natural disasters.
Modelling trade-offs between environmental, social and economic outcomes from fire management strategies.
Estimating the value to farmers from agricultural extension.
Understanding how decision makers use research to design agri-environment policy and the design features of successful agri-environment schemes.
Publications
I have over 20 peer reviewed publications, including the free online ebook, 'Learning from agri-environment schemes in Australia: investing in biodiversity and other public goods and services in farming landscapes’ by Ansell, D, Gibson, FL, Salt, D, ANU Press. 2016. (http://dx.doi.org/10.22459/LFAESA.05.2016)
Roles, responsibilities and expertise
My current position is Research Fellow, on projects funded by the Bushfire and Natural Hazard Cooperative Research Centre and ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions.
Future research
I am keenly interested in valuing agricultural extension and understanding the adoption drivers for agricultural research.

I have a number of projects suitable for Honours research students and research scholarships may be available for talented students.
