Biography
I am a cardiovascular physiologist with an 11 year track record in translatable cardiovascular research, for which I have won 25 prizes and awards. I received my PhD (with Distinction) from UWA in 2010, for which I was awarded the 2010 UWA Robert Street Prize for most outstanding PhD thesis (University-wide). I have held competitive CI funding since commencing my PhD in 2007, including a National Heart Foundation & National Health and Medical Research Council Postgraduate scholarship, and National Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the Western World. It is also the most costly, consuming $7.6 billion of Australian healthcare expenditure. I am internationally recognized as the very first to identify that the L-type calcium channel regulates mitochondrial function in the heart, and that this regulation is impaired in models of human heart disease. This has revolutionized the understanding of how mitochondrial function is regulated in the heart. I am also the first to test novel therapies that target the L-type calcium channel to repair this functional association in order to prevent heart disease.
