Biography
Jeremy completed his BA (Hons) at the University of Natal, South Africa and his MA and PhD at Queen's University at Kingston, Canada. He teaches global history; South African, African and British imperial history; and the history of race and racism. His research interests include the evolution of immigration restriction legislation in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as race, gender and the law in nineteenth and twentieth century South Africa.
Key research
In addition to publishing widely on South African and British imperial history (see research profile below) in 2011 he completed a book, _Government House and Western Australian Society, 1829-2009_ (UWA Publishing, 2011), which was shortlisted for the 2011 WA Premier’s Book Awards (WA History) and received a Special Commendation, 2012 Margaret Medcalf Award.

Forthcoming publications include "Serious Collisions: Settlers, Indigenous People, and Imperial Policy in Western Australia and Natal" (coauthored with Ann Curthoys) forthcoming in _Journal of Australian Colonial History_, 2013.
