Jill Benn has significant experience in the leadership and delivery of library services in the higher education environment. She is currently the University Librarian at the University of Western Australia (UWA), a research intensive university and a member of the Group of Eight Australian universities. Jill’s role requires the direction of 100 library staff spread over six physical locations, who successfully provide a range of library services to over 1,500 academic staff and 25,000 students.

Jill has an excellent understanding of the needs of teachers, learners and researchers. She has played a pivotal role for several acclaimed initiatives at UWA including new library spaces, a new improved student IT support model, improved support for research and the implementation of a mandatory online unit for all commencing undergraduate students. Jill’s open and consultative communication style combined with her ability to provide effective leadership, has resulted in the reshaping of services and the implementation of significant changes aimed at improving the student experience. She is focused on client engagement as a key strategy to develop and improve services.

Jill is currently the Chair of the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Research Advisory Committee, a Board Member of the International Association of University Librarians (IATUL), a member of the Knowledge Unlatched Steering Committee and is actively involved with the Western Australian Group of University Librarians (WAGUL). She is also engaged with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), holding a silver pin for service to the profession. Her expertise has been recognised through invitations to present at national and international conferences and she has demonstrated reflective practice through a number of publications. This professional involvement has enabled her to develop a national and international network of colleagues.
