Biography
After studying at Oxford University (First Class Honours in Italian and French, 1950; MA, 1957), taught Italian studies (literature and language) at the University of California at Berkeley (1957-1961), University of Reading (1961-1977), The University of Western Australia (1978-1997). Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, The University of Western Australia, 1998 to the present.
Publications
Over 75 articles published in refereed scholarly journals, ranging over the span of Italian literature, from 1250 to the present, while concentrating on Dante, Petrarch, medieval and Renaissance culture.

8 books, including Understanding Dante, University of Notre Dame Press, 2004,
judged to be “the best book on Dante in any language” (Times Literary Supplement and Sole e 24 Ore, Rome). A revised and enlarged edition published in 2010: Perché Dante?, Roma, Aracne Editrice, in the series sponsored by the Società Dantesca Italiana.
