Biography
My research and teaching roles at UWA are complemented by over two decades experience in public health and health promotion. This has included work with academic, government and non-government organisations as well as engagement as a public health consultant in WA, nationally and internationally. In one of my first jobs I had the opportunity to be involved in the development of legislation to ban tobacco advertising in WA, and I have continued to work in tobacco control over the years, most recently as a technical advisor to The Union, working to reduce the enormous preventable burden of tobacco related diseases in Vietnam and the Philippines.

I am a tireless advocate for research being relevant and useful to the real world, and the need for academia to go beyond 'the ivory tower'.
Key research
Much of my research is focused on the need for more upstream and join-up solutions to address complex social challenges such as homelessness, incarceration, social isolation and closing the gap in Aboriginal wellbeing. Other areas of research over the last decade have included social capital and sense of community; the role of pets in the community; tobacco control, nature-based play and mental health.
Most of her research is multidisciplinary and encompasses a breadth of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. She is involved in a diverse mix of research and knowledge mobilisation, with increasing focus on the need for more upstream and join-up solutions to address complex social challenges such as homelessness, Aboriginal wellbeing, social isolation and health inequalities. I Underpinning all of my research is a strong interest and commitment to research that is useful and relevant to the ‘real world’.
Roles, responsibilities and expertise
Multi-disciplinary collaborations are increasingly called for in research, and I currently hold positions in the School of Population and Global Health (Faculty of Medicine) and the Centre for Social Impact (Business School, UWA).

I am active in research, teaching, supervision of postgraduate students and in service roles within UWA and the wider community.

Much of my research has focused on ‘wicked problems’ that have significant public policy implications, hence engaging with community organisations, government agencies and policy makers is an important extension of my research. I am also able to draw on health and community sector ties to enrich the teaching and learning experiences of students studying health leadership.
Funding received
Since completing my PhD in 2006, I have secured research competitive research funding within WA, nationally and in one instance, internationally, to a total value of nearly 8 million dollars. This has included grants from a variety of national and state research funding schemes, and commissioned research from government and non-government organisations.
