Michael was educated at the University of Western Australia, completing his PhD in plant biochemistry on non-phosphorylative respiration in developing soybean and mango fruits in 2002, before continuing his research at Oxford University. He returned to Perth and established a position in the horticulture unit at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, building on industry links he made through his undergrad and postgrad research. He established grants with industry investment with colleagues at UWA to explore signalling in oxidation/ reduction (redox) signalling and relationships to antioxidant qualities of grapes and apples. In 2007, he moved to a jointly funded UWA/ DAFWA position as a Lecturer, which allowed him to expand his research to drive value for the horticulture, grape and wine industries, through genomic and post-genomic technologies. He currently leads three ARC grants on grapevine, with a major interest in the cellular signals that govern dormancy and life-cycle transitions in optimal and marginal climates. In addition, he’s leading national research on the genomic basis of clonal variation in grapevines. He has strong international ties in plant cell and molecular biology, particularly in the UK and Europe, where he holds a Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of Leeds. His research team ( of postdocs and postgraduates continues to grow from this base in plant oxygen and redox signalling, while he builds the contribution he can make to the growth of the Australian grape and wine, and broader horticulture industries.
