Key research
My research interests are predominantly in applied geophysics, in particular research relevant to the mining and petroleum industries and cross-disciplinary studies combining the different, but complementary, geological information present in various geoscientific datasets. I also have geological research interests in palaeoseismology, the structure and tectonics of mineralised terrains and hydrocarbon basins, astroblemes, mafic dyke swarms and petrophysics.
Mining industry-related research includes; understanding the geophysical responses of mineral deposits especially from a petrophysical/geological perspective; novel approaches to processing of magnetic and similar datasets; and the ‘geological’ interpretation of geophysical datasets from mineralised terrains.
Petroleum-industry relevant research involves mostly the structural interpretation of gravity, aeromagnetic and seismic reflection data.
I am also interested in intra-plate seismicity in the context of the associated eismic hazard, which requires geophysical studies ranging in scale from local, near surface (palaeofault scarps), to the regional/crustal scale (wide-angle seismic survey using mine blast sources).
Most projects are carried out with colleagues with geological or geographical xpertise. Several current projects involve providing a geophysical component to what is dominantly a geological project.
Some specific research areas are described below:
Geophysical Responses of Mineral Deposits
Western Australia
This project was initiated when it was recognised that a mineral province of the importance of Western Australia was poorly described in terms of geophysical case studies. Numerous industry authors contributed papers, including the first significant descriptions of major deposits such as the Golden Mile near Kalgoorlie, the iron ore deposits of the Hamersley Basin, the heavy mineral sands at Enneabba.
The resulting publication, “Geophysical Signatures of Western Australian Mineral Deposits”, has sold around 1000 copies, i.e. its entire print run and only a few copies are still available. Since the 1994 publication/session case study publications have become common place in the ASEG’s journal Exploration Geophysics”.
South Australia
This project was supported by Primary Industries and Resources South Australia. Reflecting then state of knowledge in South Australia much material was located in the Government archives and re-interpreted. During the latter stages of the project recent exploration successes in South Australia allowed several industry authors to contribute to the project.
“Geophysical Signatures of South Australian Mineral Deposits” is available through ASEG publication outlets.
Interpetation of Geophysical Imagery
Interpretation of Regional-Scale Geophysical Datasets from Mineralised Terrains (magnetics, seismic, gravity, magnetotellurics)
Intra- plate Seismicity and Seismic Hazard in the Southwest of Western Australia
Geophysical Studies of Sedimentary Basins in Western Australia and the Northern Territory
