- Tim Shanahan is Principal Adviser at the University of Western Australia, working in the areas of innovation and industry engagement.
Tim was the founding Director of the Energy and Minerals Institute (EMI) at UWA. The EMI was formed in November 2007, with the important task of uniting the high level of energy and minerals research and activities across the University.
In his role as Director of the EMI, Tim served on many boards representing UWA, including the WA Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA) , the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET), the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC) and the National Resource Sciences Precinct (NRSP).
Tim was also a founder of the In the Zone initiative (which promotes thought-leadership, dialogue and engagement between the Western Australian resources hub and the Asian region), and the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC).
Tim’s role at the University is a product of his depth and breadth of experience and networks within in the resources, business and government sectors in Western Australia.
From June 2001 Tim was Chief Executive of the Western Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME). The CME is the peak advocacy group for the resources sector in WA.
From 1989 to 2000, Tim was the Executive Director of the Western Australian Municipal Association, the representative organisation of local government in Western Australia.
In 2014, Tim was appointed Chairman of WA Super, having served 10 years as an Independent Trustee Director.
In 2016, Tim was appointed Chair of the Western Australian Regional Development Trust, of which he has been a member since 2010. He is also the former Chairman of the Pilbara Development Commission.
Tim was Deputy Chairman of the Esperance Port Authority until its amalgamation in 2014.
Tim is a Councillor of the RACWA and a former President. He is also a Director of RAC Holdings Pty Ltd, which owns and operates the RACWA’s insurance, motoring, finance and tourism businesses. He is an Honorary Life Member of the RACWA has also served on the Board of the AAA.
Tim is a Trustee of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) and served on the State Advisory Council of CEDA for many years.
Tim is a past Chairman of the Australia Day Council, Western Australia and a longstanding ADCWA State Management Committee member.
In January 2001, he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding service to local government and in April 2003, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to local government in Western Australia.
He was the recipient of the 2007 WA Gas Industry Development Award.
Tim is a Law graduate from The University of Western Australia.
