Community Partners Save the Children
Our support for the Save the Children annual book sale enables vital funds to be raised for vulnerable children in Perth and Australia, as well as overseas.
More than 10,000 people visit the annual book sale with about 120,000 books donated each year. These are sorted at UWA’s Claremont campus and then sold in the undercroft of Winthrop Hall.
From humble beginnings in 1964 when the University branch of Save the Children Australia raised £101 through its first book sale at UWA, the event is now WA’s largest second-hand book sale and generates much excitement among book lovers in Perth.
Now in its 53rd year, the book sale is a well-established event in the University’s calendar and raises money for Save the Children each year by selling donated second-hand books.
About the partnership
Our community and publicity channels lift the profile of the annual book sale and spread the word about the work Save the Children does through its programs.
The WA Save the Children branch utilises UWA student volunteers throughout the year, and currently has three UWA student volunteers in admin roles in its West Perth office, providing invaluable assistance. The branch also recruits our students to volunteer and prepare for and help out at the sale in various roles. It is currently recruiting more students to assist with visiting schools and promoting Save the Children. Through this partnership, our students gain valuable skills and exposure to a reputable and worldwide not-for-profit organisation.
The longstanding partnership enables us both to engage with the public in all genres. The partnership develops strong relations within the community, fosters positive engagement and enhances both our profiles.
