A Longitudinal Study on the Adaptation of Greek Women in Australia

Emeritus Professor and Honorary Senior Research Fellow Reg Appleyard AM will speak about his 43-year longitudinal study of migrants’ adaptation in Australia.

In 1964, interviews were conducted with 78 single Greek women before they emigrated to Australia under an assisted passage scheme designed to even the gender balance of single Greeks in Melbourne and Sydney. Follow-up interviews were conducted in Australia, and in Greece with those who returned, in 1965, 1976, 1991 and 2007, and with their spouses and children after 1976.

The talk will convey and evaluate results published following each set of interviews and the overview findings presently being written. It will give special attention to the adaptation of second general interviewees and convey aspects of data collection and evaluation over the 43-year longitudinal period.
